The Art of The Start And Starting Over…

Starting an insurance agency is exciting, scary, overwhelming, exhausting, rewarding.  I could go on and on with the adjectives.  The beginning stages of any business are filled with all kinds of unknowns.  It is often difficult to anticipate and prepare for what lies ahead.  As Dr. Phil says, “You don’t know, what you don’t know.”

My name is Jeff Grimm and I am the owner of Lifetime Insurance Services in Shelby Township, Michigan. I have been in the insurance industry since 2007 and I have experienced the ups and downs that go along with starting an insurance agency.  In fact I have ridden this emotional roller coaster not once, but twice.

I opened up the doors on November 1, 2007 as a 27 year old scratch agent with ZERO clients. After researching multiple insurance companies I ultimately chose to open up a State Farm agency.  Back then I knew absolutely nothing about property & casualty insurance or how to run a business.  After a few months of training at the State Farm headquarters in Bloomington, Illinois I was ready to go.  The scary part is I don’t know how READY I actually was. Truth be told, I didn’t have a clue!  I didn’t even know how to complete an auto insurance application.

Fast forward 30 days and at the end of my first month my team had written over 100 new property & casualty policies. Not bad for a newbie to the insurance industry just learning as he goes…We continued this pace for the next 3.5 years building up a nice client base.

After 3.5 years of long days and stressful nights I had built a successful and fast growing insurance agency.  I was finally starting to see the fruits of my labor after pouring money into the agency for the previous few years.  The stress and the anxiety that come with starting a new business were finally starting to ease up and I was able to catch my breath.  But rather than enjoy this moment, I decided that being a captive agent wasn’t for me and I decided to open up an independent insurance agency.

After consulting with a childhood friend we both decided that we wanted to go into business together and Lifetime Insurance Services Inc. was born.  We have been growing rapidly for the last 3 years and I am excited for what the future has in store for us and our team.  When I left State Farm I had to leave all my clients behind due to a non-compete clause in my contract.  So here I was, starting ALL OVER again.

Since starting my insurance career I have done a lot of things RIGHT  and a lot of things WRONG.  Both agencies have been run on a non-existent marketing budget and as a result I have had to get creative to bring in new business.  I have become a full-time student in insurance marketing and I am always on the lookout for new ideas.  The ideas that I have implemented have led to the explosive growth of my agency.
